Professional background:
Mr Colman Byrnes is a substantive General and Colorectal Surgeon, based in Antrim Area Hospital. He was appointed as a full-time consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon in Antrim Area Hospital some 16 years ago, in July 2007. Mr Byrnes maintains interests in Colonoscopy (including Bowel Screening), Surgical management of Colorectal Disease, including Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel disease, Gallbladder surgery, Hernias, and Day surgery.

Education Background:
Mr Byrnes’ undergraduate medical training was in Queen’s University Belfast where he obtained his Primary Medical Degree in 1993 in addition to a BSc in Physiology. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1997.
Postgraduate surgical training was undertaken primarily throughout Northern Ireland, with an additional fellowship in laparoscopic (Keyhole) surgery in Dublin.
A period of surgical research in the Johns Hopkins University Baltimore USA, led to an MD qualification by Thesis and a significant Prize from the Wound Healing Society.
