Melissa Traynor

Respiratory Physiologist

I specialise in lung function investigations that include spirometry, carbon monoxide transfer factor (DLCO), reversibility testing and FeNO testing, which are essential in diagnosing and monitoring long-term conditions such as COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung disease.

I am a Senior Respiratory Physiologist with over 15 years of experience in lung function testing, and I have a keen interest in COPD and asthma. I am currently leading the Early Respiratory Diagnostics Project in the Armagh and Dungannon GP Federation. I am the first physiologist to be employed in primary care in NI. Before this, I worked in lung function labs in hospitals across the UK, NI, and ROI. I have also lectured part-time at the University of Ulster on the Healthcare Science degree programme. Currently, I teach the accredited spirometry course in NI and lecture occasionally on the post-grad respiratory nursing course at Queen’s University.

I obtained my first degree at Liverpool John Moore’s University before being employed as an apprentice Respiratory Physiologist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. I gained my second degree through the City of Westminster College and Middlesex University in London in 2011. I obtained my professional ARTP Part 1 and Part 2 qualifications in 2008 and 2011. In ’22/’23, I completed a diploma in COPD management and Change management.

I am vice chair of the ARTP NI Taskforce Committee, which is committed to improving physiological standards regionally, and am the lead on the ARTP NI Standards workstream.

I am passionate about improving the quality and standards of physiological investigations in NI and making quality lung function testing accessible to all.
