Mr Hegarty is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee preservation procedures, including ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair, and limb realignment. His NHS practice is in Altnagelvin Hospital and privately at Mid Ulster Clinic and Kingsbridge.

He completed his medical undergraduate studies at Queen’s University Belfast and completed postgraduate training throughout Northern Ireland. Subsequently, he went further afield to Canada on a fellowship to work at the prestigious Fowler Kennedy Clinic, bringing back new skills and techniques which he continues to advance to improve the care provided here in Northern Ireland.

Mr Hegarty’s primary focus is to preserve the patient’s joint when injured at a young age for two main goals: Returning to sporting activity and/or delaying the need for arthroplasty/replacement surgery in the future, achieved through the restoration of knee stability and alignment.
