What is an Echocardiogram Scan?
An echocardiogram scan, also known as an ECHO scan, is an ultrasound test that looks at how your heart works. It uses sound waves to create clear images of your heart, including the chambers, valves and blood flow.
Echocardiograms are used to assess the structure and function of your heart, to diagnose heart conditions and plan treatment. They’re carried out by our experienced cardiac consultants, and do not involve radiation. An ECHO scan usually takes around 30 minutes, and you can return to your normal activities straight after.
Who the Scan Is For?
An echocardiogram scan is suitable if you have symptoms that may be linked to a heart condition.
You may be advised to have an ECHO scan if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or palpitations. The scan may also be recommended if you have a heart murmur, high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease, or an existing heart condition that needs review.
You will need a referral from your GP or you can be referred directly following an assessment with our cardiology team.
What the Scan Can Detect
An echocardiogram scan helps identify problems with the structure and function of your heart. It allows your consultant to see how the heart muscle moves, how the valves open and close, and how blood flows through the heart. This helps explain symptoms such as breathlessness, chest discomfort or palpitations.
Common conditions an echocardiogram scan can detect include:
- Heart valve problems, such as narrowing or leakage
- Reduced heart pumping function
- Thickening or enlargement of the heart chambers
- Heart failure and cardiomyopathy
- Fluid around the heart
- Damage caused by a previous heart attack
- Structural heart abnormalities present from birth
These findings help your consultant understand what is affecting your heart and decide whether treatment, monitoring or further tests are needed.
