Experiencing Pain or Problems When You Walk?
Walking is something most people do without thinking. If you’re experiencing pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, or lower back, the way you walk may be contributing to your symptoms.
At Mid Ulster Clinic, we provide clinical gait analysis to assess your movement, joint function, and medical history, helping identify the cause of pain or injury and guide you towards the appropriate treatment.
Book an appointment today and take the first step towards moving more comfortably.
What is Clinical Gait Analysis?
Clinical gait analysis is a medical assessment of how you walk, used to identify movement abnormalities that may be contributing to pain or affecting mobility. Unlike “free gait assessments” offered in sports shops, which are typically focused on footwear or running style, clinical gait analysis forms part of a wider evaluation of your symptoms, medical history, and physical examination.
Who is Clinical Gait Analysis for?
Clinical gait analysis may be appropriate if you:
- Experience persistent foot, ankle, knee, hip, or lower back pain
- Have recurring sports or overuse injuries
- Have noticed changes in the way you walk
- Feel unsteady or have concerns about your balance
- Are recovering from an injury or orthopaedic surgery
- Have been advised by a healthcare professional to undergo gait assessment
Clinical gait analysis is suitable for adults and children and can help assess a wide range of musculoskeletal and mobility problems.
What’s Involved in Clinical Gait Analysis
A clinical gait analysis begins with a discussion about your symptoms, how they have developed over time, and any previous injuries or treatments. This is followed by a physical examination of the feet and lower limbs, looking at areas such as joint movement, muscle strength, posture, balance, foot mechanics, and leg alignment.
Your walking pattern will then be assessed and, where appropriate, this may include running or video analysis. Once the assessment is complete, the findings will be explained clearly, along with any recommended treatment or further investigation.
Conditions Gait Analysis Can Detect
Clinical gait analysis can help identify movement abnormalities that may be contributing to a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Persistent foot pain
Walking abnormalities may contribute to pain affecting the heel, arch, forefoot, or toes. - Plantar fasciitis
Biomechanical factors can place additional strain on the plantar fascia and contribute to recurring heel pain. - Knee pain
Altered lower-limb alignment or movement patterns may place increased stress on the knee. - Hip and lower back pain
The way forces move through the feet and legs can affect the hips, pelvis, and spine. - Sports and overuse injuries
Gait assessment can identify movement patterns associated with recurring injury during sports. - Balance and mobility problems
Changes in gait may contribute to instability, reduced mobility, or difficulty walking.
If you’re unsure whether clinical gait analysis is appropriate for your symptoms, one of our clinicians will advise you during your appointment.
