Private Dyspraxia (DCD) Assessment

Private Dyspraxia (DCD) Assessment

What Is Dyspraxia/DCD in Children?

Dyspraxia, also called Developmental Coordination Disorder, affects how a child plans and carries out physical movements. It is not linked to intelligence, but it can impact everyday tasks such as dressing, using cutlery, handwriting or sports. Children with Dyspraxia or DCD may need more time to learn new movements and may find some physical activities harder than others.

The condition can also affect organisation, attention and how a child processes information. With the right assessment and support, you can better understand your child’s strengths and challenges and help them build useful skills.

Signs Your Child May Need a Dyspraxia/DCD Assessment

Every child develops at their own pace, but certain patterns can suggest Dyspraxia or DCD. You may wish to seek an assessment if your child:

Frequently trips, bumps into things or seems unsteady when walking or running

  • Struggles with buttons, zips, cutlery or tying shoelaces
  • Finds handwriting slow or difficult to read
  • Avoids or feels anxious about sports or playground activities
  • Takes longer than expected to learn new physical skills
  • Appears disorganised with schoolwork or personal items
  • Finds it hard to follow instructions with several steps

An assessment can help you understand whether these challenges are related to Dyspraxia or DCD and what support could make a difference.

What the Dyspraxia/DCD Assessment Involves

The assessment looks at how your child moves, learns and manages everyday tasks. It is carried out by a clinician who specialises in child development. Children aged 7-18 can attend for this assessment. Adults can attend up to age 25. Your assessment will also include an appointment with a paediatrician for Children or GP for 18-25 year olds.

Assessments will be carried out over 1 – 2 sessions. You will be asked about your child’s history, including pregnancy, birth, early milestones and any current concerns. Your child will be scored using standardised assessments in order to check balance, co-ordination, fine motor skills and how they follow instructions. These tasks are designed to be age-appropriate and not stressful.

Information may also be gathered from school or nursery to understand how your child manages in different settings. Once the assessment is complete, you will receive clear feedback and guidance on practical steps you can take to support your child.

Benefits of Getting a Dyspraxia/DCD Assessment

An assessment gives you a clear understanding of your child’s needs. It helps you identify the reasons behind any coordination or motor difficulties and guides you on how to support them.

With a formal assessment, you can:

  • Access tailored recommendations for home and school
  • Share clear information with teachers and other professionals
  • Understand your child’s strengths alongside areas of difficulty
  • Plan support early to build confidence and independence
  • Reduce frustration linked to tasks that feel harder than they should

Knowing what your child requires allows you to make informed decisions and get the right help in place.
