IBS Treatment

Is IBS Affecting Your Daily Life?

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be frustrating. From abdominal pain and bloating to diarrhoea and constipation, IBS symptoms often make everyday activities difficult to manage.

At Mid Ulster Clinic, we provide private IBS assessments and personalised treatment plans to help diagnose IBS and manage your symptoms effectively.

Book an appointment today and take the first step towards better digestive health.

What Is IBS Treatment?

IBS treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and improving your quality of life. As no two people experience IBS in the same way, treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms and medical history.

Your consultation will include a detailed discussion about your symptoms, how long they have been affecting you, any previous investigations, and treatments you have already tried. Where appropriate, your consultant may recommend further tests to rule out other digestive conditions before confirming an IBS diagnosis.

Once your assessment is complete, you’ll receive a personalised management plan designed to help control your symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

Assessment & Treatments We Offer

Your first appointment is about understanding your symptoms and building a clear picture of your digestive health. Rather than focusing solely on treating individual symptoms, we aim to identify the most appropriate approach for long-term symptom control.

Depending on your symptoms, assessment and treatment may include:

  • A detailed review of your digestive symptoms and medical history
  • Blood or stool tests where clinically appropriate
  • Referral for further investigations, such as colonoscopy or imaging, if required
  • Dietary advice, including identifying possible food triggers
  • Lifestyle recommendations to help reduce flare-ups
  • Medication to manage diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, or bloating
  • Follow-up appointments to review your progress and adjust treatment where needed

Your consultant will explain each recommendation and ensure you understand the available treatment options.

Who Is The Treatment For?

You may benefit from a private IBS assessment if you experience:

  • Ongoing abdominal pain or cramping
  • Persistent bloating
  • Diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating bowel habits
  • Digestive symptoms that keep returning
  • Symptoms that are affecting your quality of life
  • Ongoing digestive problems without a clear diagnosis

IBS is commonly diagnosed in adults under 50, but it can also affect older adults and, less commonly, children and teenagers. Some people experience symptoms that come and go over time, while others have more persistent issues.

If you’re unsure whether your symptoms are caused by IBS, our consultants can assess your symptoms and determine whether further investigation is required.

Do I Need a Referral?

You do not need a GP referral to book a private IBS consultation at Mid Ulster Clinic.

Many patients choose to self-refer, allowing them to access specialist advice without lengthy NHS waiting times. If you have already been referred by your GP or another healthcare professional, we are also happy to accept referrals and work alongside them where appropriate.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

IBS is a long-term condition, but many people notice improvement within weeks of starting treatment.

Most patients leave their first consultation with a management plan. If further tests are needed, these are arranged promptly, with follow-up to review results and progress. Treatment is adjusted over time, with some patients achieving good symptom control within a few months.

Pricing & Payment Options

We believe in providing clear, transparent pricing with no hidden costs. Before proceeding with any investigations or treatment, your consultant will explain the available options and associated fees.

Cost

Private IBS consultations start from £230.

If further investigations or follow-up appointments are recommended, these will be discussed with you in advance.

Payment Options

There are two ways to pay for treatment:

  • Self-funded – Many patients choose to pay for their consultation and treatment directly. Our team will provide clear information about costs before your appointment.
  • Private Health Insurance Some private health insurance policies may contribute towards consultation or investigation costs. Please check your chosen consultant’s profile to confirm which healthcare providers they accept, and review your level of cover with your insurer before attending.
