What is a Private Blood Test?
A private blood test involves taking a small sample of your blood to assess your general health or investigate specific symptoms and medical conditions. Your blood sample is collected during a phlebotomy appointment, where a trained healthcare professional safely takes a blood sample before it is sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis.
Who Are Private Blood Tests For?
Private blood tests are suitable for adults and children and may be recommended if you:
- Are experiencing ongoing or unexplained symptoms
- Want to investigate a specific health concern
- Need to monitor an existing medical condition
- Have been advised to have a blood test by a GP or consultant
- Want a routine health check
- Require regular blood monitoring
Most blood tests require a referral from a healthcare professional.
If you do not already have a referral, you can arrange a consultation with one of our GPs or consultants. Where clinically appropriate, they will recommend the most appropriate blood test. If you already have a referral, you can simply book a private phlebotomy appointment to have your blood sample taken. Book either of these appointments online now by selecting a consultant on this page.
Blood Tests We Offer
At Mid Ulster Clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of routine and specialist blood tests that can detect a wide range of conditions.
Blood tests we offer include:
- Full Blood Test
A full blood test provides an overview of your general health, and is often used as a starting point when investigating unexplained symptoms. - Hormone Blood Test
Hormone blood tests measure your hormone levels, to investigate symptoms like tiredness, weight changes, irregular periods, fertility concerns, low testosterone, and menopause related symptoms. - Thyroid Blood Test
Thyroid blood tests assess how well your thyroid gland is working. They can help diagnose an underactive or overactive thyroid.
- Diabetes Blood Test
Diabetes blood tests measure your blood glucose levels and can help diagnose diabetes or prediabetes. They are also used to monitor diabetes and assess how well blood sugar levels are being controlled. - Ferritin Blood Test
Ferritin tests measure the amount of iron stored in your body. They can help identify iron deficiency, iron overload, and some types of anaemia. - Pregnancy Blood Test
Pregnancy blood tests detect the pregnancy hormone hCG and can confirm pregnancy earlier than many home pregnancy tests. They may also be used to monitor pregnancy in certain circumstances.
If you are unsure which blood test you need, your consultant will recommend the most appropriate test during your appointment.
What’s Involved in a Blood Test
During your phlebotomy appointment, a trained phlebotomist or nurse will take a small sample of blood from a vein, usually in your arm. The procedure normally takes only a few minutes, and most patients experience little more than a brief scratch sensation.
Before your blood draw appointment, you may be asked to:
- Fast before the blood test, depending on the type of test
- Bring details of any medication you are taking
- Share any relevant medical information or previous test results
Your blood sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Most routine blood test results are available within 1 to 3 working days, although some specialist blood tests may take longer. Once your results are available, they will be reviewed by your consultant, who will explain the findings and discuss any recommended treatment, further investigation, or follow up care.
Pricing and Payment Options
Before most blood tests can be arranged, patients will require a consultation with one of our GPs or consultants to assess their symptoms and provide an appropriate referral. If you already have a blood test request from another healthcare provider, you may only require a private phlebotomy appointment to have your blood sample taken.
Consultation Pricing
- GP Consultation: Starts from £125
- Consultant Consultation: Starts from £200
Blood Test & Phlebotomy Pricing
- Private blood tests start from £20, although the final cost will depend on the tests required.
- Private phlebotomy appointments for patients attending with an existing referral start from £75.
Payment Options
You can pay for private blood tests two ways at Mid Ulster Clinic:
- Self funded appointments: Most patients choose to fund blood tests themselves.
- Private health insurance: If you have private health insurance, please check your consultant’s profile to see which insurers they accept.
If you would like more information about pricing or appointment availability, our team will be happy to help.
