Dexa Scans

Dexa Scans

Worried About Osteoporosis or Bone Health?

Many people worry about bone strength as they get older, especially if they’ve had fractures, menopause-related changes, long-term steroid use, or a family history of osteoporosis. Our private DEXA scans offer a quick and accurate way to assess bone density and understand your risk.

Book an appointment with one of our consultants today to arrange your private DEXA scan.

What Is a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a specialised imaging test used to measure bone density. It is the gold-standard test for diagnosing osteopenia and osteoporosis. The scan uses a very low dose of X-rays to assess bone strength, most commonly at the hip and spine. Results help identify reduced bone density early, allowing timely advice, monitoring, or treatment where appropriate.

DEXA Scan Services We Offer

We provide referral for private DEXA scanning as part of a clinically led diagnostic service. Unlike long wait times of the NHS, our private clinic offers fast access to scanning and results.

DEXA scans are quick, non-invasive tests used to assess bone density and fracture risk. The scan involves lying on a padded table while the scanner passes over the body, usually focusing on the hips and spine. There is no recovery time, and you can return to normal activities immediately after your appointment.

Following your DEXA scan, a review will be arranged with your consultant who will discuss the report & next steps clearly.

Who Is a DEXA Scan For?

A DEXA scan may be helpful if you’ve been advised to check your bone health or have concerns about bone strength, osteoporosis, or fracture risk. This can include people with a history of fractures, hormonal changes such as menopause, or certain long-term medications.

During your appointment, one of our clinicians will take time to review your medical history and make sure the scan is appropriate and useful for you.

How Do I Prepare for a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA scan is simple and requires very little preparation. The facility you are referred to will provide further guidance and advice ahead of your scan.

How Often Should a DEXA Scan be Repeated?

The recommended interval for repeat DEXA scanning depends on your results and individual risk factors. For many patients, repeat scanning is advised every 2–3 years, particularly if there is evidence of bone loss or if the scan is being used to monitor treatment. Your clinician will advise on the most appropriate follow-up plan.

Pricing and Payment Options

We can advise on the cost of a scan with the appropriate facility at the time of referral.

Payment options

DEXA scans are self-funded. Some health insurance policies may cover bone density testing, so you may wish to check with your insurer if you’re unsure.

If you have any questions about pricing or payment, our team is happy to discuss this with you before you book.
