What is a Private CT-Scan?
A private CT scan is an advanced imaging test used to create detailed cross-sectional images of the inside of the body. CT stands for Computed Tomography and combines X-ray technology with computer imaging to help assess bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissue structures.
At Mid Ulster Clinic, we offer private CT scan referral services for patients in Northern Ireland. Through our trusted imaging partners, we can help arrange prompt access to private CT appointments based on clinical need.
Who The Scan is For
A private CT scan may be recommended for patients experiencing symptoms that require more detailed internal imaging.
CT scans are commonly used to investigate:
- ongoing abdominal or chest symptoms
- persistent headaches or dizziness
- suspected internal injury
- unexplained pain
- sinus or facial problems
- certain respiratory concerns
They may also be requested to help diagnose, monitor, or assess a range of medical conditions where more detailed imaging is required than a standard X-ray can provide.
If you do not already have a referral, you can arrange an assessment with one of our experienced GPs or consultants. If appropriate, we can organise your private CT referral and advise on suitable next steps.
What The Scan Involves
During the CT-scan, you will lie on a motorised table that moves slowly through the CT scanner while a series of images are taken. The procedure itself is painless and is usually completed within a short appointment time.
Before your scan, you may be asked about:
- your symptoms and medical history
- allergies or previous reactions to contrast dye
- current medication
- pregnancy status where relevant
Some CT scans require contrast dye to improve image clarity. If this is needed, the imaging team will explain the process fully before your appointment.
Following the scan, the images are reviewed by a specialist radiologist. A report is then sent to your referring clinician, who will discuss the findings and any recommended follow-up care.
What The Scan Can Detect
CT scans can help provide detailed information about a wide range of conditions affecting different areas of the body. Depending on the scan requested, CT imaging may help identify:
- fractures and complex bone injuries
- chest and lung conditions
- sinus disease
- internal inflammation or infection
- kidney stones
- certain vascular conditions
- abnormalities affecting internal organs
- causes of unexplained pain or swelling
