What is a Private MRI Scan?
An MRI scan is used to produce detailed images of structures inside the body, including organs, joints, muscles, nerves, and soft tissue. MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and, unlike X-rays or CT scans, it does not use radiation.
At Mid Ulster Clinic, we provide private MRI referral services for patients across Northern Ireland. Through our partners in Belfast, we can help arrange fast access to private MRI appointments, often with same-day or next day availability.
Who The Scan is For
An MRI scan may be recommended if you are experiencing symptoms such as:
- ongoing back or neck pain
- joint pain or sports injuries
- headaches or neurological symptoms
- numbness or nerve-related pain
- unexplained or persistent symptoms
Many patients choose private MRI scans to avoid lengthy waiting lists and gain quicker clarity on the cause of their symptoms.
If you do not already have a referral, you can arrange an assessment with one of our experienced GPs or consultants. Where clinically appropriate, we can organise your MRI referral and advise on appropriate next steps.
What The Scan Involves
MRI scans are carried out by experienced radiographers at our trusted private imaging partners in Belfast. During the appointment, you will lie on a scanning table while detailed images are taken. Depending on the area being scanned, appointments typically last between 20 and 60 minutes.
Before the scan, you may be asked about:
- your symptoms and medical history
- previous surgery
- implants or medical devices
- current medication
Some scans may require contrast dye to improve image quality. If needed, this will be explained before your appointment.
Once completed, your images are reviewed by a specialist radiologist and the results are sent to your referring clinician, who will discuss the findings and any recommended treatment or further investigation.
What The Scan Can Detect
MRI scans can help identify a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurological, and soft tissue conditions.
Depending on the area being examined, MRI imaging may help detect:
- muscle, ligament, or tendon injuries
- slipped discs and spinal problems
- arthritis and joint damage
- trapped or compressed nerves
- sports injuries
- soft tissue abnormalities
- brain and neurological conditions
- inflammatory or degenerative changes
